When Logic Stops Working
What caring has taught me about stress, safety and survival mode
There’s something caring for my dad has made very clear.
When the world becomes confusing, safety matters more than logic.
I see how reassured he is when I make him feel safe.
A hand on his shoulder while we talk.
We hug often.
We hold hands a lot.
And when we shave, it becomes a small ritual, warm flannels, pre- and post-shave balm, gentle massage.
None of it is complicated.
But it works.
In a world that is slowly becoming more confusing and unsettling, what he needs above all is to feel safe.
Not corrected.
Not reasoned with.
Not explained to.
Safe.
Why am I telling you this?
Because really…
We’re not that different.
When you’re stressed, your thinking narrows.
You default to autopilot.
Your reactions get sharper.
Your world feels smaller.
You don’t think,
“Ah yes, my cognition has dipped.”
You just feel:
Irritable.
Overwhelmed.
On edge.
Not quite yourself.
In those moments, logic rarely lands.
Not because you’re irrational, but because your nervous system has shifted into protection.
When the body feels under threat, it prepares to fight or flee.
Blood flow changes.
Breath shortens.
Focus narrows.
Trying to reason your way out of that state is like arguing with a smoke alarm.
Caring for my dad has stripped that lesson back to its essence.
Touch is one of our most ancient soothing mechanisms.
There’s a reason so many somatic tools involve it.
A hand on your belly.
A self-hug.
Gentle tapping.
Firm pressure through the palms.
These are not “hacks.”
They’re signals.
They tell your nervous system:
You’re here.
You’re safe.
The threat has passed.
And when the body feels safe, clarity returns.
This is why I use these cues in my own practice, and in my work with others.
But tools alone aren’t the whole picture.
They help in the moment.
They interrupt the spiral.
Real change comes when you build nervous system literacy.
When you understand your body, recognise your patterns and triggers, and know which lever to pull and when.
That’s when life feels less reactive.
Less braced.
More expansive.
